STD testing and treatment is important for maintaining sexual health and preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The testing process is usually quick, painless, and can sometimes be free. STD testing is not typically included in regular medical exams, so you need to specifically request it.

What is STD Testing?

Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) testing includes a series of tests that identify the presence of sexually transmitted infections. The type of test a person gets will depend on symptoms, and their medical and sexual history. The testing process may involve a blood sample, a urine sample, a swab of the inside of the mouth, a swab from the genitals, or a swab of any discharge or sores. Sometimes, the sample can be tested right there at the health provider’s office. Other times, the sample is sent to a lab and the results come within a few days typically. (3)

Who Should Get Tested?

Screening is recommended in adults and adolescents ages 15-65. Women 25 years or older are at increased risk for chlamydial and gonococcal infections if they have a new partner, more than one sex partner, a sex partner with concurrent partners, or a sex partner who has an STI. Patients who are at higher risk for infection might need to be assessed for a history of genital herpes symptoms. (1)

It’s important to note that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common and most STIs don’t have symptoms. The only way to know if you have an STI is to get tested. (6) If your test results are positive for an STI infection, It is also important to inform your current and any past partners since you were last tested, in order to prevent further spread.

Teens are at Greatest Risk for STD infections

Teens are at most risk for STDs due to factors such as lack of knowledge, limited access to health care, and confidentiality concerns. In most states, once a teen is 13, they can get checked and tested for STDs without a parent’s involvement. Many family doctors or pediatricians will agree to treat their teen patients confidentially. (7)

What to Expect When You Come to Us for STD Testing?

When you come to us for STD testing, you can expect a confidential and respectful environment. Our healthcare providers will ask about your medical and sexual history to determine which tests are most appropriate for you.

Depending on the type of STD, the testing process may involve a blood sample, a urine sample, a swab of the inside of the mouth, a swab from the genitals, or a swab of any discharge or sores. The sample may be tested in our office or sent to a lab, and the results will be shared with you as soon as they are available. (3)

Is Free STD Testing available?

Center for Family Health and Education, as well as Priority Care Medical Group provide FREE std testing to those patients that qualify. Free testing is determined based on income, age, and insurance eligibility.

If your income is considered low by federal standards, you most likely will qualify for free std testing and many other free healthcare services such as primary care health checkups, preventative care, vaccinations, and more. To find out if you qualify for Free Std Testing, request an appointment from this article’s page. You will be contacted by one of our providers, and they can help you determine the total cost to you (if any), and any steps you need to take to be eligible if you are not already qualified for free testing.

If you think you may have been exposed to STI, do not hesitate, get tested by a healthcare provider, prevent the spread, and if testing shows a positive result, your healthcare provider can provide guidance and treatment.
