Pills: Weight loss pills, such as those containing semaglutide, can be effective in helping people lose weight by decreasing appetite and making you feel full longer. However, it’s important to note that these medications can have side effects and may not be suitable for everyone (1).

Medication: Other weight loss medications function by hitting the receptors in the intestinal tract, decreasing appetite and slowing down the intestinal tract, which helps you feel full longer (1).

Injections: Certain medications, such as semaglutide (Wegovy) and liraglutide (Saxenda), are injectable and can help with weight loss by decreasing appetite and slowing down digestion. These medications are typically used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity (8).

It’s important to note that the effectiveness of these options can vary from person to person, and what works best for one person may not work as well for another. Therefore, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any weight loss program.

What are the safer options to weight loss?

The safest options for weight loss typically involve lifestyle changes, such as adopting a balanced diet and regular physical activity. These methods are generally safe for most people and can lead to sustainable weight loss over time (1).

Weight loss medications and injections can also be safe when used under the supervision of a healthcare professional. These treatments can be particularly effective for individuals who have not been able to achieve significant weight loss through diet and exercise alone.

Are there Free Weight Loss Programs?

Center for Family Health and Education, as well as Priority Care Medical Group, are non-profit organizations that provide a free weight loss program for those who have Medi-Cal or other select insurances (contact for most up to date information). This program is guided by a doctor and/or nurse, ensuring that participants receive professional support throughout their weight loss journey.

Other healthcare or insurance programs may provide free weight loss programs. For example, Health Net has developed programs for weight loss and nutrition, giving access to free programs that support individuals through the process of learning to eat smarter and lose weight (3) .

If you are not eligible for Free Weight Loss Programs, what other options exist?

If you’re not eligible for free weight loss programs, there are still options available. Our health clinics offer a sliding fee based on income and the number of people in the household, among other factors, to determine eligibility for reduced-cost weight loss programs. Other options include charity care for discounted or free weight-loss surgery for those who fall within the boundaries of the federal poverty level (4).

There are also weight loss grants available, such as those offered by the Weight Loss Surgery Foundation of America (WLFSA), which help people who are unable to afford gastric bypass get the funding for all or part of bariatric surgery (4).
