What Are Sports Physicals?

Sports physical exams, also known as a pre-participation physical evaluation, kids sports physical, or school sports clearance, is a medical exam designed to make sure children or teens are healthy enough to safely participate in organized sports. This exam helps identify any potential health risks, prevent injuries, and ensure your child is ready to play their best.

Who Needs a Sports Physical-and At What Age?

The general recommendation is that children begin getting sports physicals as early as age six if they are involved in school or community sports. These exams are especially important for:

  • Elementary school children (ages 6–10) starting community or school sports teams
  • Middle school students (ages 11–13), as sports become more competitive and physically demanding
  • High school athletes (ages 14–18), who often participate in rigorous training and competitive events.

Our nonprofit clinics in Southern California provide sports physicals for kids and teens of all ages. If you’re unsure about what your child needs for their age or school, you can always call us or visit one of our clinics, and we will help guide you.

Are Sports Physicals Exams Covered by Insurance?

As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in California, we are committed to making these services accessible to all families. Here’s how we ensure affordability:

  1. Medi-Cal Coverage: Medi-Cal may cover a sports physical exam.
  2. CPE: Children’s Presumptive Eligibility is for children who do not have Medi-cal but may qualify for temporary status.  Call us for assistance if you do not have insurance for your child.
  3. Sliding Fee Scale: For those who do not qualify for Medi-Cal or have no insurance, we provide services on a sliding fee scale based on household income.
  4. 3rd Party Insurance: Depending on your insurance, the exam may be covered or provided at a reduced cost.  Please call one of our clinics near you and we can find out if your insurance provider covers the exam.

Difference Between Kids Physical (Well-Child Exam) and Sports Physical

  • Well-Child Exam: Focuses on your child’s overall health, including physical, developmental, emotional, and social well-being. It aims to monitor growth, prevent illness, address behavioral or developmental concerns, and keep immunizations up to date.
  • Sports Physical: Specifically evaluates whether your child is healthy enough to safely participate in sports. The focus is on identifying any medical or musculoskeletal issues that could increase the risk of injury or complications during athletic activities.

A sports physical does not replace a well-child exam; both are important for a child’s health and safety.
