What happens if there is not enough supply of Coronavirus treatments and medications?

Treatments for COVID-19 are in high demand as you would expect during these times.  Thankfully, we are getting huge supplies of Coronavirus vaccines, testing, and other treatments across America.

However, in the event there is more ill people than supply available, there are recommendations by the CDPH (California Department Public Health) in regards to who gets priority when supply is exceedingly limited:

• Prioritizing high-risk patients with moderate illness(as defined in “Coronavirus High Risk Factors“ below) in the following order:
  • Immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive medications
  • Incompletely vaccinated AND > 65 years of age with risk factors for severe disease
  • > 65 years of age with risk factors for severe disease

Current Coronavirus High Risk Factors:

• age (risk increases with each decade after age 50) ,
• cancer,
• cardiovascular disease,
• chronic kidney disease,
• chronic lung disease,
• diabetes,
• immunocompromising conditions or receipt of immunosuppressive medications,
• obesity (body mass index ≥30), 
• sickle cell disease
• likelihood of developing severe COVID-19 increases when a person has multiple comorbidities.
