Poor Sleep? Visit Your Local Community Health Center

Chronic sleep problems are recognized as a medical condition and are directly linked to serious health risks including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and mental health disorders.
Having trouble getting good sleep? Primary care and behavioral health providers at community health centers may be able to help identify and treat sleep problems at low or no cost for eligible patients (depending on eligiblity at your local community health center).

Why Sleep Matters More Than You Think

Sleep is not just rest—it is when your body repairs itself, balances hormones, and resets the brain. Consistently poor sleep has been linked to serious chronic conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression. Adults who regularly sleep fewer than 7 hours per night are at significantly higher risk for these conditions than those who get enough rest.

Common Signs You May Have a Sleep Problem

Many people assume being tired is just part of a busy life, but these signs may point to something that needs medical attention. Signs of poor sleep include:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep most nights
  • Waking up and not feeling rested
  • Feeling irritable, anxious, or unable to concentrate during the day
  • Falling asleep at unexpected times
  • Loud snoring or gasping during sleep (possible sleep apnea)
  • Relying on caffeine or sleep aids to get through the day
  • How Poor Sleep Affects the Whole Body

When sleep is regularly disrupted, the body stays in a mild stress state that raises blood pressure, spikes blood sugar, and increases appetite for high calorie foods. Over time this can worsen or trigger diabetes, hypertension, and weight gain.
Poor sleep also weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight off common illnesses like colds and flu. In children, poor sleep can affect growth, behavior, school performance, and emotional regulation.

The Connection Between Sleep and Mental Health

Sleep problems and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression are closely linked—each one can make the other worse. Stress from work, finances, relationships, or trauma is one of the most common causes of insomnia, and without proper support, the cycle can be hard to break on your own.
Talking to a behavioral health provider, is often one of the most effective ways to address the root cause of sleep issues.

    How Our Clinics Can Help

At Center for Family Health and Education and Priority Care Medical Group, you do not need to figure this out alone. Our teams offer two key entry points for sleep related concerns:

  • Primary Care: Your primary care provider can evaluate your sleep history, rule out underlying conditions like sleep apnea, thyroid problems, diabetes, or high blood pressure, and recommend a treatment plan. Medications, referrals for sleep studies, and lifestyle guidance are all available through primary care. Learn more at Primary Care Services page.

  • Behavioral Health: If stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma are affecting your sleep, our behavioral health team provides counseling and psychiatric services to help you address these issues and develop healthier sleep habits. Learn more at Behavioral Health Services page.

  • Both services are available with Medi Cal coverage or on a sliding fee scale for uninsured and/or low income patients.

Simple Sleep Tips to Start Tonight

While you are scheduling your appointment, these habits can make a meaningful difference right away:
  • Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet
  • Avoid screens (phones, tablets, TV) at least 30 minutes before bed
  • Limit caffeine after noon and avoid heavy meals close to bedtime
  • Try light stretching or deep breathing before sleep to reduce stress
  • Can I get help if I have Medi Cal or no insurance?

Yes. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we accept Medi Cal and offer a sliding fee scale for uninsured or low income patients. Many patients pay little or nothing out of pocket for both primary care and behavioral health visits.
